Outline:
This course will introduce managers to the foundations of a manager's role, highlighting their responsibilities in the performance management of individuals in line with the organisational goals. A heavy emphasis is placed upon achieving results through other people. Key skills developed include good communication, an understanding of what motivates and de-motivates a team and effective delegation.
Who should attend?
Recently appointed managers and supervisors who wish to understand the principles of good management practice and want an introduction to good management techniques.
Course Content:
- The leader's role. What are the important functions a leader performs?
- Taking a step back and thinking about the tasks, teams and individuals.
- Understanding your own leadership style and considering areas for development.
- Achieving results through other people, by planning the group's work and analysing the internal and external factors which may influence success.
- Identifying goals and managing performance through individual objective setting and review.
- Understanding and recognising the motivations of individuals and harnessing these for the achievement of results. Understanding the importance of "pull" and "push" techniques.
- Delegation, a structured approach by following a five-point process, considering what should be delegated and to whom. Avoiding the pitfalls of poor delegation.
- How should managers communicate? The importance of and techniques used in delivering positive and negative feedback.
- Action planning, an opportunity to think about the lessons of the course and how they may be applied practically in the workplace.
- How can leaders adapt and what will they do differently?
